25 November- 2nd team vs Caversham PV

BY ROB

The 2nd team crossed the river for their fixture against unbeaten Caversham Park Village, ultimately losing 2-20. Fortunately, the matches were closer than the result suggests, with some good squash played on courts that are soon to be renovated.

Jose was up first against Matt Roberts, in what was an entertaining game. Jose ran well as Matt moved the ball to the four corners. It is always a challenge to play good percentage shots when you are being stretched and ultimately it was a case of the player who made the least errors won the match 3-0.

James Mathers went up against his namesake James Knight. The match was characterised by some long rallies, with both players jockeying for position. It was clear before the game that James would win and lose, which they did. Unfortunately for Uni, it was the other James who managed to dominate the T, shutting JM out 3-0.

The third James on the night, James Ball, was next up against the cunning Chris Blakey. Both played some great squash, but it was Chris who proved to be the more accurate of the two, closing out James 3-0.

Rob managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in his game against Jon Weldon. After taking a 2-0 lead, he saw it unravel as Jon came back into the match, ultimately winning 3-2.

The final tie of the evening was Kyle Slater, who on debut for Uni, came up against the evergreen Rip Oyler. Kyle moved well and the game had some fantastic rallies, but it was ultimately the GB Vet (as he introduced himself) who triumphed 3-0.

The Caversham Park Village club have successfully fundraised, and their courts are due for renovation, which includes floors, walls and heating. This is great news for them as well as for squash in the county.
