28 October - 1sts Home vs Greenacre Wanderers

BY GEOFF and JACK

The first team suffered their second defeat of the season to Greenacre Wanderers last night.

Due to illness/injury two of the big guns from the second team (Geoff and Charles) were called up to field a side.

Charles was up first and was dispatched reasonable quickly 3/0 by Ali at number 5 but getting enough points per game to surely improve his squash level rankings.

Meanwhile Jack was having a better time of it winning 3/0.

Harry was up next at number 1, but although close wasn't able to take a game off Marc.

Geoff only managed a couple of classic "Geoff'd it's" (to those not familiar a trademarked easy drop into the middle of the tin) in his match, going down 3/0 to Imran.

So it was now down to late arrival Evan to try and salvage some points for the team. Things started off well with him taking the first game. But that was it, Nigel's accurate shots left Evan struggling to find an answer and he bowed out 1/3.

This week the Team drew Greenacre at home. A challenging evening was ahead with both their inspirational Captain and “The Quiet One” Gosnell absent. Fortunately, two reliable veterans of the 2nd team were called upon with the expectation of delivering a performance of a lifetime.

First on was “The Terrier” Turnell. Taking on his team mate’s constructive feedback from the previous match to stop hitting the ball to the middle of the court, he found hitting a length to be surprisingly effective. In an uncharacteristically convincing performance against a longtime bogey player, his new found strategy dispatched of his opponent in 3.

After a positive start, optimism was running high. Charles was next up against a spritely young player. Although putting up a strong fight, he was defeated 3-0, swiftly dashing our high hopes for the evening. In an even more worrying development, Charles discovered the Rajmoni phones were disconnected! Was the curry house closed? Had Henry finally upset them to the point of blocking our number?

Following on was 2nd team talisman Geoff. He faced a challenging up-and-coming player, and despite his best efforts and tough rallies, his opponents speed around the court resulted in him going 2 games down. In the 3rd, Geoff changed course and adopted a tactic of confusing the marker. This was highly effective, with several points going his way that raised eyebrows and quiet gasps from the crowd. However, even the questionable marking wasn’t quite enough to claw back the match and Geoff succumbed 3-0.

“Hobo” Carr was playing for the team to stay in the match. His opponent had a killer forehand and the game started at a blistering pace with both players looking strong. Whilst making for excellent viewing in hindsight it was not the wisest strategy for preserving Harry’s delicate legs. Despite his best efforts to hack through the pain, his opponent exploited Harry’s weariness and the match was lost 3-0.

In attempt to gather some points for the team, the typically late “Bottlejob” Henman went on. In a very strong start, he picked apart his half asleep opponent who was ready to be in his pyjamas in a convincing 1st game. However, in a shocking turnaround, the mature opposition woke up and made a comeback to which Evan couldn’t respond and took the next 3 games.

A difficult evening which ended in a 4-1 loss. Next time team!
